چکیده

Intestinal flora plays an important role in the decomposition and fecal excretion of methylmercury. The assumed mechanism is that decomposition of organic mercury (o-Hg) to inorganic mercury (i-Hg) by intestinal flora in cecum decreases the reabsorption of mercury in large intestines. To confirm this hypothesis, we examined the large intestinal mercury absorption in vitro from intestinal contents of methylmercury administered mice. Methylmercury (2 mg Hg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally to adult female mice, and the contents of small intestine (ileum) and cecum were taken out 24 hr after the administration. Ratios of organic mercury to total mercury in small intestinal content and cecal content were 86% and 49%, respectively.

and intestinal contents is also apparent from a time-course graph (Fig. 1). The amount of methylmercuric chloride produced by the caecal contents is not directly proportional to the time of incubation, but instead rises rapidly to a peak at 2670h and then falls with further incubation. In the presence of the intestinal contents, the peak (at 48h) is sharper, and virtually no HgCI, is methylated...

The methylation of mercury by the gastro-intestinal contents of the rat.

Bacteria in the sediments of lakes and rivers, and in soil, have been shown to convert inorganic mercury salts into the more toxic methylmercury and dimethylmercury, which are absorbed from the human gastrointestinal tract much more rapidly than their inorganic counterparts (Jensen & Jernelov, 1969; Matsumura et al., 1972; Beckert et al., 1974; Clarkson, 1971). Abdulla et al. (1973) demolistrat...

An Investigation into the Role of P-Glycoprotein in the Intestinal Absorption of Repaglinide: Assessed by Everted Gut Sac and Caco-2 Cell Line

The present study aimed at exploring the potential of the P-glycoprotein (P-gp) transporters as a barrier to the repaglinide (REG) epithelial permeability. In-vitro intestinal absorption models, the everted gut sac, and Caco-2 cell line, were used to study the possible role of P-gp in intestinal transport of REG. In the everted gut sacs, apparent permeability coefficients showed cargo concentra...

Levels of Mercury in Persian Gulf Frozen Fish Species

Severe discharge of sewage and industrial effluents into the Persian Gulf leads to the deposition of various types of heavy metals, especially lead and mercury, in the muscles of fish. Total mercury and methylmercury contents were determined in the edible parts (muscle tissue, fillet) of two different most popular frozen fish species from the Persian Gulf to ascertain whether the concentrations...
